Kofi Kingston on the original plans for The New Day

“The original pitch for The New Day was for us to be like, almost like, three disgruntled employees that were going to come together and take our aggression out on the entire roster. You know, we wanted to be guys that were upset with where they were in their careers.”

“For me, I was a guy who was going to be like, happy, go lucky, do a bunch of highflying moves, and go lose a match. E (BiG E) was at the time kind of like floundering going back and forth; you know, Woods never got a chance to get off the ground.”

“So collectively, we were going to be three guys that came together, and now that we are stronger as a unit, we are able to overcome anything, and that’s kind of what happened, but it wasn’t quite the path that we anticipated taking.”

“So Big E was doing that whole preacher gimmick, so at the time it was like, ‘Okay, E (Big E), we want you guys to like preach as well’, like, I don’t really go to church, you know, Woods is not like a church goer either.”

“So it’s like, ‘Ok, now we got to go out and do what we do, but we believed in ourselves to the point where we said, You can give us anything, and we’ll take whatever you give us and we’ll make it into something entertaining because we believe in our chemistry’, and sure enough, that’s exactly what happened.”
